Yes, third-party two-wheeler insurance is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Riding without it is punishable: ₹2,000 first offence, ₹4,000 repeat, plus possible 3-month imprisonment. Protects from potentially devastating third-party liability claims.
Third-party covers only liability for damage to others' body/property. Comprehensive includes third-party plus own vehicle protection against accidents, theft, fire, floods, riots, vandalism, and personal accident cover. Comprehensive recommended for new or expensive vehicles.
Third-party premiums fixed by IRDAI: up to 75cc approx. ₹538/yr, 75-150cc approx. ₹714/yr, 150-350cc approx. ₹1,366/yr, above 350cc approx. ₹2,804/yr. Comprehensive varies by IDV, engine capacity, age, city, and add-ons. Typical 150cc scooter comprehensive: ₹2,000-4,500/yr.
IDV is the current market value of your two-wheeler - manufacturer's price minus depreciation by age. It's the maximum payout for theft or total loss. Higher IDV = higher payout but higher premium. Never accept artificially low IDV to save premium.
NCB is a discount for claim-free years: 20% (year 1), 25% (year 2), 35% (year 3), 45% (year 4), 50% (year 5+). Belongs to owner, not vehicle transferable to new bike. Resets 0% on any claim. NCB Protector add-on preserves it.
Top add-ons: Zero Depreciation (full parts cost without depreciation deduction), Engine Protection (waterlogging/hydrostatic lock), Roadside Assistance, Return to Invoice (full invoice on total loss), NCB Protector. Each adds ₹200-800/year.
Immediately: FIR for theft/injury/third-party damage. Within 24-48 hours: intimate insurer via app/website/helpline. Submit claim form, RC, license, FIR, photos. Surveyor inspects. Cashless at network garage (3-7 days) or reimbursement (15-30 days).
Expired within 90 days: most insurers renew without inspection; NCB lost. Expired more than 90 days: vehicle inspection required; all NCB lost. During gap: no coverage; riding is a punishable offence. Set auto-renewal reminders.
Yes, comprehensive covers floods, cyclones, earthquakes, storms, lightning, hailstorms, landslides. But engine damage from water ingestion (hydrostatic lock) excluded from base policy - needs Engine Protection add-on. Critical in flood-prone metros.
Exclusions: riding without valid license, riding under influence, normal wear and tear, mechanical breakdown (not accident-caused), tyre/tube damage (unless vehicle also damaged), consequential loss, racing, intentional damage. Third party-only excludes own vehicle damage.
Yes, buyers should apply within 14 days of ownership transfer. Submit Form 29/30, sale deed, new owner's KYC, existing policy. Remaining tenure and NCB transfer. Without transfer, new owner rides uninsured (illegal) and sellers may face liability.
Standard policy deducts depreciation on replaced parts: rubber/nylon/plastic 50%, fiberglass 30%, glass nil. On ₹10,000 plastic panel claim, you receive ₹5,000. Zero Depreciation add-on eliminates this, and insurer pays full replacement cost.
Policies covering 2-3 years in a single purchase. Benefits include protection from annual hikes, no renewal lapses, and bundled discounts. IRDAI introduced long-term packages which include multi-year third-party + 1-year own-damage (renewable annually).
PA cover provides compensation for owner-driver's accidental death/permanent disability. Compulsory PA cover of ₹15 lakh is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act. Optional PA is available for pillion riders. Can opt out if you have a standalone PA of ₹15 lakh+.
Online is generally better through which you can compare multiple insurers, customize add-ons, 5 to 15% lower premiums. Dealerships offer convenience but limited choice, tied-up insurer, and bundled unnecessary add-ons at higher cost. Policy terms and claim process identical either way.
