What are Personal Loan Pre-Closure Charges? Check the Latest Rules 2026

15 Oct 2026•6 min read•22 views

Summary:

  • Personal loan pre-closure charges are paid when you repay your personal loan in full before maturity.

  • These charges are usually a fixed percentage of the remaining loan amount plus 18% GST.

  • From January 1, 2026, “floating-rate” loans can be prepaid or closed without any charges.

  • However, “fixed-rate” personal loans may still have prepayment or pre-closure charges.

  • You can apply for business loans or secure funds against your stocks or mutual fund units on the airpay money app.

What are Personal Loan Pre-Closure Charges?

Personal loan pre-closure charge is a fee levied when you repay the full loan amount before the agreed maturity date. This process is known as "foreclosure" of the loan.

But why are these fees charged?

When a loan ends early, the lender earns less interest than expected. To offset this loss, they apply a charge on the remaining loan balance. Usually, this fee is calculated as a percentage of the outstanding amount.

To understand better, let’s study an example:

Loan Details

Value

Loan amount

₹3,00,000

Tenure

24 months

Outstanding After 10 Months

₹1,55,000

Pre-closure Charge

4%

Fee Payable

₹6,200 + 18% GST

Assume that after paying EMIs for 10 months, the remaining loan is ₹1,55,000. If you decide to foreclose the loan at this point, the lender applies a 4% charge on ₹1,55,000. This comes to ₹6,200. Next, GST @ 18% is added to this amount. The total personal loan pre-closure charge you may pay could amount to ₹7,316 (₹6,200 + 18% GST).

No Foreclosure or Prepayment Charges on Floating-Rate Loans w.e.f January 1, 2026

According to a Business Standard Report (dated March 30, 2026), RBI has now removed the prepayment and foreclosure charges on floating-rate loans. This new rule applies to personal loans that are sanctioned or renewed from January 1, 2026.

After this change, for floating-rate personal loans, lenders cannot charge any “personal loan pre-closure charges”. Now, you can:

  • Repay the full loan early (foreclosure) without any penalty. or

  • Make partial payments (prepayment) without extra charges.

However, realise that this rule does not apply to fixed-rate personal loans. In such cases, the lender may still charge prepayment or foreclosure fees as per the loan agreement.

Why Closing Your Personal Loan Early Can Work in Your Favour

One of the major advantages of foreclosure is lower interest cost. When you close a personal loan before maturity, you stop future interest from adding up. This may lead to significant savings and lower the total cost of borrowing.

Always remember the longer the remaining tenure, the higher the potential savings from early closure.

Additionally, some more benefits you may realise are:

1. Reduced Financial Obligations

A personal loan creates a fixed monthly commitment in the form of EMIs. By closing the loan early, you remove this obligation from your monthly budget. This reduces financial pressure and frees up funds that can be used for savings, investments, or planned expenses.

2. Positive Impact on Credit Profile

Repaying a loan in full before the due date shows your “high creditworthiness". It indicates that you can manage debt and repay it responsibly. This may increase your credit score and make you eligible for favourable loan terms when applying for future credit.

3. Freedom from Ongoing Debt

Closing the loan early may offer peace of mind and a sense of financial independence. Since there are no pending EMIs linked to that loan, you can better plan for your future goals without factoring in existing debt.

When Closing a Personal Loan Early May Not Be Ideal

The primary concern is the personal loan pre-closure charges. This fee is calculated on the outstanding loan amount and may reduce the benefit of early repayment.

In some cases, particularly when only a few EMIs are left, the interest you save may be lower than the charge you pay. As a result, the cost of pre-closure may outweigh the actual interest saved.

For example,

  • Suppose your remaining loan balance is ₹20,000 and the lender charges a 4% pre-closure fee.

  • The total personal loan pre-closure charges amount to ₹944 [₹800 + ₹144 (18% GST)].

  • Now, assume that the remaining interest cost is only ₹750 (to be paid if the loan continues).

  • In this case, pre-closure may not be beneficial as you are paying more in charges than the interest you save.

Additionally, some more risks you must be aware of are:

1. Loss of Better Financial Opportunities

Pre-closing a loan requires a lump sum payment. This amount could otherwise be used for investments such as:

If these alternatives offer returns higher than the loan interest rate, using funds for pre-closure may not be the right financial decision. In such cases, keeping the loan and investing surplus funds elsewhere may lead to better financial outcomes.

2. Pressure on Available Cash Reserves

Using a large amount of money to close a loan can reduce your available cash balance. This may create difficulty in handling unexpected expenses such as medical needs, job changes, or urgent home repairs.

Furthermore, if most of your savings are used for pre-closure, you may also face a “liquidity crunch”. As a result, you might have to secure credit again during emergencies.

Conclusion

So now you know what personal loan pre-closure charges are and when you may or may not close your loan early. A pre-closure charge is a fixed percentage applied to the remaining loan balance, with an additional 18% GST on the fee. This cost can sometimes reduce or even cancel out the benefit of interest savings (particularly when the remaining tenure is short).

However, as per the latest RBI rules (effective from January 1, 2026), floating-rate loans can be prepaid or foreclosed without any charges. Note that this benefit does not apply to fixed-rate loans, where charges may still exist.
