What is Four-Wheeler Insurance? Types, Coverage & Benefits Explained

22 Oct 2026•6 min read•138 views

Summary:

  • 4-wheeler car insurance (third-party liability cover) is legally mandatory in India.

  • A third-party insurance does not cover damage to your own car.

  • Comprehensive 4-wheeler car insurance policies cover own vehicle damage + third-party liability.

  • 4-wheeler insurance cost depends on vehicle value, engine capacity, location, and IDV (Insured Declared Value).

  • By maintaining a claim-free record, you can earn No Claim Bonus (NCB) discounts of up to 50 percent.

  • Beyond base policies, you can also purchase “add-on covers” like zero depreciation and roadside assistance.

A 4-wheeler car insurance is a legal contract between the vehicle owner and the insurance company. It provides financial protection for insured vehicles against risks such as accidents, fire, theft, and damage caused by natural disasters.

In India, most four-wheeler insurance policies also include third-party liability cover, which is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Driving a 4-wheeler without valid insurance in India is a punishable offence.

For example, without a valid car insurance policy in Delhi, the penalty can be a fine of ₹2,000 for the first violation. Repeat offences attract a higher fine of ₹4,000. Further, authorities may also seize the vehicle, and insurers may charge higher premiums in the future.

Are you looking to buy a 4-wheeler car insurance policy in 2026? Read this article to first understand its various types (along with coverage), factors influencing 4-wheeler insurance cost, and its various benefits.

Types of 4-wheeler Car Insurance Policy in India

In India, 4-wheeler car insurance policies are broadly classified into two main types:

  • Comprehensive Insurance and
  • Third-Party Liability Insurance

These two policies differ in their scope of coverage and level of financial protection offered. Let’s understand in detail:

1. Comprehensive Four-Wheeler Insurance Policy

This policy type provides “full coverage” for both the car owner and the vehicle. It covers:

  • Damage to your own car +

  • Legal liability toward third parties

Moreover, comprehensive four-wheeler insurance plans also include “personal accident cover” for the driver (you don’t have to purchase it separately). For those unaware, this cover is mandatory in India. It is a requirement for all owner-drivers of insured vehicles to take this cover for a minimum sum insured of ₹15 lakh.

For more clarity, let’s understand what a comprehensive policy usually covers and does not cover:

What This Policy Covers

What This Policy Does Not Cover

A comprehensive plan offers you financial coverage in these situations:

  • Damage caused by accidents, including external impact

  • Loss or damage due to fire, explosion, flood, storm, or similar events

  • Damage during vehicle transit

  • Theft or burglary of the car or its accessories

  • Loss caused by natural calamities such as earthquakes or floods

  • Damage caused by malicious or intentional acts by others

  • Legal liability if your car causes injury, death, or property damage to a third party.

The following situations are generally excluded from coverage:

  • Damage due to regular use, ageing, or wear and tear

  • Electrical or mechanical failure or breakdown

  • Damage caused when the driver does not hold a valid driving licence

  • Reduction in the value of parts due to depreciation

  • Damage or loss occurring outside India

  • Damage is limited only to tyres or tubes

  • Accidents caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

2. Third-Party Liability Four-Wheeler Insurance Policy

This is the most basic form of four-wheeler insurance in India and is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act. This policy protects the vehicle owner from legal and financial responsibility if their car causes harm to others. Let’s see its coverage rules:

What This Policy Covers

What This Policy Does Not Cover

Third-party insurance offers financial protection in these cases:

  • Injury or death of a third party caused by the insured vehicle

  • Damage to third-party property

  • Legal costs + compensation arising from third-party claims

This policy does not cover any damage to your own car.

  • Repairs, theft, fire damage, or loss of the insured vehicle are not included.

How is Four-Wheeler Insurance Cost Decided? 6 Factors You Must Know in 2026!

The 4-wheeler insurance cost in India is not fixed. It is based on multiple factors assessed by insurers to measure the risk associated with your vehicle and driving behaviour. What are they? Let’s check them out:

1. Vehicle Make and Model

Cars with higher prices, powerful engines, or expensive spare parts attract higher premiums. For example, if we talk about the third-party car insurance premium rates, the following are set by IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) for FY 2025:

Vehicle Category

Engine Capacity

Third-Party Premium

Cars

Up to 1,000 cc

₹2,094

Cars

1,000 cc to 1,500 cc

₹3,416

Cars

Above 1,500 cc

₹7,897

You can observe that premium rates increase progressively based on the engine capacity.

2. Age of the Vehicle

New cars usually have higher premiums because their market value is higher. As a car gets older, its value reduces, which also lowers the insurance cost.

3. Location and Vehicle Usage

Cars driven in cities with high traffic, accident rates, or theft cases usually cost more to insure.

4. Insured Declared Value (IDV)

IDV is the maximum amount the insurer pays at the time of claim. A higher IDV increases the premium but also increases “claim payout”.

5. Type of Insurance Coverage

Third-party insurance costs less because it only covers legal liability. Comprehensive insurance costs more because it also covers damage or loss to your own car.

6. No Claim Bonus (NCB)

If no claims are made during the policy period, insurers offer a discount (up to 50%) at renewal. A higher NCB reduces the premium payable.

4 Major Benefits of Four-Wheeler Insurance in 2026

The 4-wheeler car insurance offers both financial + legal protection to vehicle owners. As per IBEF (a trust set up by the Ministry of Commerce), motor insurance increased by 25.6% in FY25. This shows that more vehicle owners purchased or renewed insurance policies during this period.

But why such growing popularity?

That’s largely due to the following benefits realised by insurers:

1. Protection for Your Own Vehicle + Third-Party Liability

A comprehensive four-wheeler insurance policy covers repair or replacement costs if your car is damaged due to accidents, fire, theft, or natural events such as floods or earthquakes.

Besides, it also includes the third-party liability cover. It is mandatory by law and pays for injury, death, or property damage caused to another person due to the insured vehicle.

2. Cashless Repair Facility

Insurers allow repairs at “authorised network garages” where the insurer settles the bill directly. The policyholder only pays for costs that are not covered under the policy.

3. No Claim Bonus (NCB)

If no claims are made during the policy period, the insurer offers a discount on the renewal premium [only for the Own Damage (OD) part]. The discount increases with each claim-free year as follows:

Claim-Free Years

NCB Discount on OD Premium

1 year

20%

2 years

25%

3 years

35%

4 years

45%

5 years or more

50% (maximum)

4. Optional Add-on Covers

“Add-ons” are optional covers that can be purchased by paying an extra premium. They provide “extended coverage” beyond what your 4-wheeler car insurance policy originally covers. Note that add-on covers can only be purchased along with a base insurance policy.

They are optional benefits that extend or enhance the coverage of the main policy and cannot be bought independently. Some popular add-ons are:

Add-Ons

Purpose

Zero Depreciation Cover

  • The insurer does not deduct depreciation on parts during a partial damage claim.

Loss of Use/ “Down Time” Protection

  • Provides a daily payout for alternate transport when the insured car is under repair or replacement.

No Claim Bonus Protection

  • Allows you to retain your no-claim bonus at the next renewal, even after making a claim.

Emergency Assistance Service Program

  • Offers 24×7 roadside support for breakdowns or accidents.

  • Usually, it includes the following services:

  • Towing

  • Fuel delivery

  • Battery jump-start

  • Tyre replacement

  • Minor roadside repairs

  • Accommodation

  • Alternate travel arrangements

Conclusion

So now you know what a 4-wheeler car insurance policy is, its key types, benefits, and cost factors. If we revise, in India, four-wheeler insurance policies are mainly of two types: comprehensive insurance and third-party liability insurance.

A comprehensive policy covers damage to your own vehicle as well as third-party liability. In contrast, a third-party liability policy only covers legal claims from third parties and does not protect your own car. Thus, it is comparatively cheaper than a comprehensive policy.

In addition to the base policy, you can also choose add-on covers such as zero depreciation, roadside assistance, or no-claim bonus protection. These provide “extra coverage” for specific risks.
