What Is a SIP Investment Calculator? Easy Guide to Calculating SIP Returns

6 Oct 2026•6 min read•18 views

Summary:

  • An SIP investment calculator estimates how much corpus you can accumulate via the SIP route.

  • The calculator uses a compound interest formula and determines the future value of your monthly SIP investments.

  • Investors can use the calculator to estimate the monthly SIP needed to achieve financial goals.

  • It can also be used to compare different investment durations and test multiple return assumptions.

  • The SIP investment calculator is available for free on the airpay money platform.

An SIP investment calculator is an online “digital” tool that shows how much money you can accumulate when investing through a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP). For those unaware, in an SIP, you invest a fixed amount of money in mutual funds at regular intervals (monthly or quarterly). The SIP calculator estimates the “future value” of these regular investments.

How Does an SIP Investment Calculator Work?

An SIP investment calculator determines the future value of an SIP using the following formula:

FV =P x  [(1 + r)n − 1/r] x (1 + r)

Where,

  • FV (Future Value): Total accumulated value at the end of the investment period

  • P: Amount invested every month

  • r: Monthly rate of return (annual return divided by 12)

  • n: Total number of monthly investments

For more clarity, let’s see an example.

Example

Assume that Mr. Raj invested ₹4,000 per month for 25 years in a passive mutual fund scheme tracking Nifty 50 at an average annual return of 12.42%* p.a. Now, let’s see how an SIP investment calculator can be used here:

  • Step 1: Convert years into months: 25 years × 12 = 300 months. So, n = 300.

  • Step 2: Calculate the monthly return: 12.42%/12 = 1.035 So, r = 1.035

  • Step 3: Apply the formula

    • FV =₹4,000 x  [(1 + 1.035)300 − 11.035] x (1 + 1.035)

Now, if we talk about the result, after 25 years, Mr. Raj could have accumulated ₹80,98,947, where his principal amount is ₹12,00,000 and ₹98,98,947 being interest.

*The return assumption is made in accordance with “Annexure I” of AMFI Best Practice Guidelines Circular No. 109-A /2024-25.

Want to Avoid Such Manual Calculations?

Start using the SIP investment calculator available for free on the airpay money platform. All you have to do is input these three basic details:

  1. Your monthly investment amount

  2. The investment period in years

  3. The expected/ desired annual return rate

Based on these details, the calculator instantly provides these three results:

A) Investment Amount

B) Interest Earned

C) Corpus Accumulated (A + B)

Total money you invested over the entire SIP period.

Total returns earned on the invested amount.

Final value of the investment after adding the invested amount and returns.

3 Ways Mutual Fund Investors Can Use an SIP Investment Calculator in 2026

Is an SIP investment calculator only a tool to estimate mutual fund SIP returns?

No! As an investor, you can also use it for:

  • Long-term planning and

  • “Disciplined” portfolio building

Want to learn how? Below are three different ways you can use an SIP investment calculator in 2026:

1. Estimate the Monthly Investment Required for a Financial Goal

Usually, investors have financial goals such as retirement savings or purchasing a home. An SIP investment calculator can be used to determine how much money needs to be invested each month to reach that goal.

For example,

  • Firstly, decide the target amount (say, ₹1 crore for retirement).

  • Select the investment period (such as 20 years).

  • Now, use a return assumption (for example, 12.42% for equity fund tracking Nifty 50).

  • Adjust the monthly SIP amount until the calculator shows the target value.

2. Compare the Impact of Different Investment Durations

Always remember that “time” plays an important role in the growth of mutual fund SIP returns. An SIP calculator can be used to see how the same monthly investment can produce different results when the investment period changes.

Let’s see how you can make this assessment using the SIP investment calculator offered by airpay money:

Step 1: Enter the basic investment details

Assume the following inputs:

  • Monthly SIP: ₹5,000

  • Expected annual return: 12.42%

Step 2: Test different investment durations

Investment Duration

Total Amount Invested

Estimated Final Value

10 years

₹6,00,000

₹11,50,193

20 years

₹12,00,000

₹49,46,277

30 years

₹18,00,000

₹1,74,74,821

Step 3: Observe the difference

Although the monthly SIP remains ₹5,000, the final value rises sharply as the investment period increases.

But why does this happen?

That’s because:

  • Investments made earlier remain in the fund for a longer period.

  • Returns generated in earlier years also generate additional returns later (“compounding effect”).

Now, you can test these scenarios multiple times before deciding how long you should continue your SIP investments.

3. Test Different Return Assumptions Before Choosing a Fund

Realise that mutual fund returns vary across categories such as large-cap, mid-cap, and hybrid funds. An SIP investment calculator can be used to estimate outcomes under different return assumptions.

For example, let’s assume you invest ₹5,000 per month for 10 years with the following return assumptions:

  • 8% (conservative estimate)

  • 10% (moderate estimate)

  • 12% (equity-oriented estimate)

Now, after entering these values on an SIP investment calculator, you can observe how the final value (corpus) changes. The benefit of this exercise? You can set “realistic expectations” and select funds that match both your risk tolerance limit and financial goals.

Conclusion

So now you know what is SIP calculator and how it works. The calculator is based on the compound interest formula and estimates the future value (FV) of your monthly or quarterly SIP investments.

In 2026, you can use it to test different investment amounts, return assumptions, and investment durations. By adjusting these inputs, you can observe how the final corpus value changes and accordingly plan your long-term mutual fund investments.
